Our Singers
Music is an important part of Makar to Makar, and we're delighted that our Thursday shows will each feature one of our three regular singers. Check out the Performers page to see which weeks they are on.
Suzanne Bonnar
Suzanne Bonnar is a Scottish-based vocalist and actress who first hit the headlines in 1991 with the BBC Forty Minutes programme Fly Me to Dunoon. Her follow-up documentary The Blacksburg Connection was a winner at the Celtic TV Awards, won a bronze medal at The New York Film and TV Festival and was a finalist in The CRE Race in the Media Awards. It shows her meeting her father, a former American serviceman, for the first time, and traces the emotional discovery of her previously unknown heritage in South Carolina. Suzanne has sang in solo and ensemble performances and acted in a variety of media. She says, 'It is such a privilege to be asked to appear on Makar To Makar with my soul sister Miss Jackie Kay. Supporting the arts and continuing to provide new platforms for expression is integral to what we do.' |

Katherine Philpott
Katherine Philpott is a textile student at Cardonald College, Glasgow, and is preparing to go into further study specialising in printed textiles. Her love of folk music began at a young age, when she would listen to a range of artists with her father in their spare time. She then began to perform traditional Scottish folk songs, delving further into the histories behind these ancient ballads and found enjoyment in retelling stories of the past in her own, unique style. The works of musicians such as The Unthanks and Karine Polwart heavily influence the style of music that Philpott performs, and she takes beauty from the sombre messages that many songs of this genre hold.
